ACT Testing for Juniors! Digital Learning Day for Freshmen, Sophomores, and Seniors! - March 11 & 12

ACT Testing for Juniors

Tuesday, March 11th: All Junior students will report to school to participate in the mandatory ACT examination. Regular school attendance is required for Juniors on this day.
Wednesday, March 12th: Only Junior students with approved accommodations requiring extended testing time over multiple days will attend school to complete their ACT testing.

Digital Learning Days for Freshman, Sophomores, and Seniors:

On both Tuesday, March 11th and Wednesday, March 12th, Freshman, Sophomore, and Senior students will engage in digital learning through Canvas. Assignments and materials will be posted for students to access remotely.
Juniors are excused from digital learning assignments on both days due to their participation in ACT testing.

We understand the importance of standardized testing and appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a smooth and successful testing environment. Please encourage your Junior student to prepare adequately for the ACT.

If you have any questions or require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Making an Informed Decision: April 1 School Referendum Approaches

We’re just weeks away from a significant moment for our schools—the upcoming vote on the Oshkosh Area School District’s (OASD) $197.8 million facilities referendum. This plan is about more than just buildings—it’s about creating better learning environments and opportunities for our students, improving safety and Americans with Disabilities (ADA) access limitations, and saving money through operational efficiencies, all while maintaining a $0 tax increase to the debt levy. This referendum represents the next step in our community-developed facilities consolidation plan, which began in 2017 and has already delivered significant improvements through Phase 1.

As members of our school community, we know you may have questions or hear questions from others about what this means for our schools. We want to ensure you have the facts and an understanding of the plan before you cast your vote on April 1!

What Will Your Vote Decide?

If the Referendum is Approved:

A new consolidated middle school will be built at the Shapiro site (close South Park and Perry Tipler, reducing from three to two westside middle schools)
Carl Traeger, Franklin, and Oakwood Elementary schools will be expanded and renovated (close Roosevelt and Shapiro, reducing from seven to five westside elementary schools)
Perry Tipler Middle School will be converted into a pre-kindergarten center and recreation department
A new auditorium will be added to Oshkosh North High School
Air conditioning will be installed at Emmeline Cook, Lakeside, and Read Elementary schools
The district will close and seek to sell South Park Middle School, Roosevelt Elementary School, and the downtown recreation center
Non-district pre-kindergarten leases will be eliminated (approximately $550,000 annual savings)

If the Referendum is Not Approved:

First and foremost, the OASD will seek community feedback to understand why it did not pass. After review, a process will be developed to adjust accordingly - with the next opportunity to go to referendum being April 2026. Additionally:

South Park students will remain in a 120-year-old building located within a restricted flight zone
Virtual learning would be required during emergency repairs at South Park due to insufficient space at other schools
Shapiro STEM Academy will still close after the 2025-2026 school year due to low enrollment (Note: Shapiro will close regardless of the referendum outcome)
Planned facilities improvements will not be made
Annual operational savings from consolidation will not be realized
Construction costs are projected to increase by 5% annually, potentially raising the project cost from $198M now to $242M by 2029

Early Voting Options:
- Absentee ballots can be requested through Friday, March 28 by 5:00 PM
- Municipalities will begin mailing absentee ballots no later than March 11
- In-person early voting begins March 18 at your local municipal clerk's office (check directly for office hours)

ASVAB Test Sign up for students interested in the military! - March 12

Hello parents of sophomores, juniors, & seniors -

If your student is considering military service in their future, they will need to complete the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Test before enlisting in a military branch. The ASVAB is a multiple choice test, administered by the United States Military, used to determine qualification for enlistment in the United States Armed Forces.

Generally, students need to drive to Milwaukee with a military recruiter to complete this test. However, we will be offering this test at Oshkosh West on Wednesday, March 12th at noon in room G11. This is a great opportunity to complete this test and see which military careers students will qualify for without needing to drive to Milwaukee. Scores will NOT be released to military recruiters unless students share them.

There are limited spaces available for this test - it is first come, first serve for sign up. If your student is hoping to enlist in the military after high school, to sign up for this test, please email Mrs. Holdorf in the Counseling office (andrea.holdorf@oshkosh.k12.wi.us).

The UW Oshkosh College of Education and Human Services is excited to announce Aspiring Titan Teachers Day on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, from 9:30am to 2:00 pm on the UW Oshkosh Campus!

This event is intended for all students who are interested in pursuing education and human services, including members of Educators Rising, as a possible career. Students will spend the day learning about how to become a teacher, attending a mini course, touring the campus, interacting with a panel of pre-service teachers, and meeting some of their future professors. Join us! Learn About the OASD’s April 1 Referendum

The Oshkosh Area School District (OASD) is inviting families and community members to learn more about the upcoming $197.8 million capital referendum, designed to improve student safety and learning spaces while maintaining a $0 tax increase to the debt levy.

To ensure the community is well-informed, the OASD has scheduled a series of information sessions and Q&A opportunities. These events will give you a chance to ask questions and understand the full scope of the referendum projects. The district’s goal is to provide the community with the necessary facts to make an informed decision on April 1.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

Appointments/leaving building options:

Infinite Campus (IC) Parent Portal - You can submit preplanned absence request online!
- In IC go under More > Absence Request.
  - Please make sure to fill out all the fields with your information so we can accurately mark your student's attendance.
  - Please allow us a minimum of 1 hour notice if your student needs to leave the building early so we have time to locate your student.
Send note with student - should be brought to Student Services before appointment to get a pass.
Call in advance - If leaving voicemail, please let us know student’s name, reason for leaving and from which door you will pick student up. Call (920) 424-4090 x4 or (920) 424-4070.
Email - you are welcome to email us for excused absences. Please email kelsey.gates@oshkosh.k12.wi.us and marcia.gonzalez@oshkosh.k12.wi.us.

Note - we are often busy on phones or helping students, so if it’s a last minute request, a call is probably the best option. We check voicemails often.

Student Services will write a pass for the student to leave and will have it delivered to the student during one of the classes before the time they are to leave. Students can leave out of Door 38 (in front by flagpole) or Door 24 (gym doors) ONLY, please let us know which door to mark on the pass. The student must sign out on the kiosk at the specified door and can leave the building.

If your student is returning from an appointment, or arriving late, they MUST sign in at either door on the kiosk so we can update attendance. They can return through either Door 24 and Door 38.

If there is an appointment that comes up with short notice, please let us know ASAP, it sometimes takes a bit to locate students and get them a pass to leave.

Safety Information

In order to ensure the safety of our students and staff, all guests at Oshkosh West High School need to have an appointment to enter the building. Guests must bring a photo ID which will be scanned upon entrance. Guests are encouraged to park in the street parking on Eagle Street across from the school and enter Door 38. If parking is full, guests may park in the visitor spaces in the large lot at the corner of Taft and Eagle Streets and enter Door 24.
Did you know...West has over 100 cameras inside and outside of our school, so most of the time, if we get a report about something taking place, we are able to use the camera video recordings to get to the bottom of things. The cameras inside the building are located in halls and common areas like the cafeterias and gyms. We encourage students and parents to report anything that might be concerning. We do take anonymous reports as well, so if you don't feel comfortable leaving your name, that is fine. We always investigate tips and reports that come to us.
Speak Up, Speak Out Tipline: Created by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, students, parents, school staff, or any community member can anonymously submit a school safety concern or threat. SUSO resource center staff work around-the-clock to respond to tips and deploy a response locally by communicating directly with school administrators and law enforcement. Once you submit your tip, please keep the chat window open to answer any questions the resource center specialist might have for you to get more actionable information for school administration or police.
